Nature Markets: A Path of Coherence, Dialogue and Integrity

The COP30 Belém dialogues, the European Roadmap and our biodiversity partnerships are all part of the same movement.

In recent months, our agenda has unfolded on two mutually reinforcing levels: on the one hand, spaces for dialogue at COP30 Belém that bring together diverse actors to imagine a just transition; on the other, concrete progress in designing nature markets based on evidence, safeguards and sound governance.

These milestones, which we share below, help us better understand where we stand today and where we want to go as a Foundation.

COP30 Belém — Socio-Environmental Dialogue for Peace

On 13 November, together with the Pontifical Commission for Latin America (PCAL) and the UNFCCC Global Innovation Hub, we co-organised the panel Socio-Environmental Dialogue for Peace: a space where religious leaders, academics, private-sector representatives and social organisations reflected together on how building peace —among people and with nature— requires active listening, justice and shared responsibility.

The meeting showed that a just transition cannot rest solely on technology or markets; it needs an ethical foundation that places human dignity and the care of ecosystems at its centre.

Our highlight: When sectors that rarely meet manage to listen to one another, alliances capable of transforming the transition are born.

COP30 Belém — Beyond Carbon: Planetary Health and Integrity

On 14 November we organised the panel Beyond Carbon: Planetary Health and Integrity at the IETA Business Hub, bringing together scientific, community, business and international policy perspectives. The discussion highlighted that climate action must broaden its focus: the crisis cannot be addressed without considering health, territory, infrastructure and citizen participation.

The message was clear: regional challenges require ambition, innovation and markets that operate with governance and social responsibility.

Our highlight: Beyond carbon, the health of the planet depends on decisions that bring together ethics, science and collective action.

The EU and Its Roadmap Towards Nature Credits: A Regulatory Framework and a Clear International Signal

In July 2025, the European Commission presented its Roadmap towards nature credits, setting out essential principles for future markets: transparency, sound governance and verifiable methodologies. This international signal reaffirms a direction we share: nature markets must be built on evidence, safeguards and territorial participation.

This European framework provides a fitting context for advancing rigorous methodologies for measuring and managing biodiversity, and it connects naturally with the partnerships we are promoting to strengthen high-integrity markets.

Our highlight: The EU is setting a clear course: integrity will be the standard for nature markets.

Our Partnership to Accelerate High-Integrity Biodiversity Markets

In this context, together with Cercarbono and Biodiversity Intelligence, we announced a strategic partnership to strengthen the development of biodiversity markets with high standards.

The Biodiversity Intelligence Methodology (BIM) —which will be incorporated into Cercarbono’s Biodiversity Certification Programme— provides a bridge between science, territory and financial markets, making it possible to measure, monitor and manage ecosystem impacts rigorously.

At EMFF we support and endorse this process as technical observers and safeguards coordinators, reaffirming our commitment to integrity, quality and community participation. This partnership is aligned with European guidance and with the global trend towards more demanding and transparent nature markets.

Our highlight: Biodiversity is the essential value of our time; protecting it requires robust methodologies and trustworthy partnerships.

A Shared Horizon

The Belém dialogues, the European Roadmap and our biodiversity partnerships are all part of the same movement: consolidating environmental markets that operate with integrity and build trust.

At EMFF we will keep working with rigour and collaboration to move towards fairer and more transparent transitions.
